My Fair Lady

I’ve been having a great time playing second trumpet in the Melbourne season of My Fair Lady, directed by Dame Julie Andrews. It’s also been an exciting opportunity to cover first trumpet for a few weeks of the run. A wonderful show- on until the end of July, ’17. Come check it out!

AYO, Young Symphonists 2017

In April 17′, I had a super week tutoring with The Australian Youth Orchestra for their Young Symphonists program. This year held in Mt Eliza, I was fortunate to work with incredibly talented students, tutors, and AYO staff.

Commission for the Mid America Freedom Band

PRESS RELEASE:

Louisa Trewartha Commissioned by Mid America Freedom Band

Attachment-1January 24, 2017 Kansas City, MO — The Mid America Freedom Band has commissioned Louisa Trewartha to compose a new piece scheduled to receive its premiere in the ensemble’s 15th season.

Trewartha, a freelance composer, conductor, educator, and trumpeter from Melbourne, Australia, was unanimously selected by a five-person panel after reviewing the submissions resulting from the fourth annual Mid America Freedom Band Call for Proposals. Each year the call is altered slightly to fit the theme of the season.

Submissions were received from a talented pool of 40 composers from across the globe including those from Brazil, China, Australia, Germany, Israel, Mexico, Argentina, Japan, the United Kingdom, and numerous entries from the United States. In keeping with the theme of the Mid America Freedom Band’s 2017–18 season “Frontiers and Pioneers,” Trewartha will write a piece inspired by Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder, to receive its premiere on October 29, 2017 at the J.C. Nichols Auditorium at the National World War I Museum and Memorial by the Mid America Freedom Band.

“Louisa’s diverse background as a performer, composer, conductor, and educator shows in her carefully crafted compositions. Her skill is evident across her gripping film scores, timbrally creative chamber music, and compelling works for brass band. We’re delighted to work with her on this new piece. It’s a honor to present new and unfamiliar voices in contemporary composition to our Kansas City audiences. I encourage those in the band world to seek out her music and that of our other stellar finalists,” writes Mid America Freedom Band Artistic Director Lee Hartman.

This new work will join pieces by Aaron Copland, Julie Giroux, Mark Camphouse, Ralph Raymond Hays, and more on the fall concert of the Mid America Freedom Band’s 15th season on October 29, 2017.

Masters Thesis Recording

On Sunday 31st of August I spent the afternoon and evening rehearsing, performing, and recording all the music for my thesis major project.

I was joined by 9 incredibly talented Melbourne musicians, a clever tech guy, and my two wonderful sisters.

Gigs!

I’ve just finished a season of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet at the Arts Centre with Houston Ballet and Orchestra Victoria. Such incredible music- thanks Sergei!

In the pit

And in the middle of that I played a baroque gig at St John’s, Southgate. It was a wonderful opportunity to have a crack at the first trumpet part of BWV 63. Bach sure knew what he was doing 🙂

Back in Melbourne

This is me being happy to be working and living back in Melbourne!Attachment-1

I’ve been very fortunate to pick up some great gigs this month. This week I’ve started rehearsals playing in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet with Orchestra Victoria and Houston Ballet. I’ve also been playing a lot of baroque trumpet; Woodend Winter Arts Festival a few weeks back and a gig this Sunday (bwv 63). Such incredible music, which is totally keeping me sane while I get my life back to some sort of normality after the past nine months of studying intensively overseas. I will also be completing my Masters thesis by August. Much to do!

Evolution

Here is a mix of my piece ‘Evolution’ that I recorded in Sofia with Radio Bulgaria in May. This was part of my Masters degree at Pulse College, Dublin.

The criteria was simply to compose a film music or game music cue of 3 minutes. The concept I came up with was for an imagined documentary about ‘Evolution’:
