‘Augmented Trumpet – First Blood’ concert by Elliott Hughes

The premiere of Louisa’s new piece Drone Swarm, for trumpet and electronics will be at:

Augmented Trumpet – First Blood

Presenting the first compositions for Elliott Hughes‘ Augmented Trumpet.

Six Melbourne composers have written new works for trumpet & electronics, designed to feature the homebuilt valve sensor that makes the instrument ‘augmented’. The sensor allows the electronics to synchronise with the acoustic sound through the movement of the valves, opening up new possibilities for each composer to explore.

Live visuals will accompany the new pieces, creating a multi-sensory experience.

ABOUT: Drone Swarm

Story 1: Bees are dying at an alarming rate because of the actions of humans. Bees are responsible for 80 percent of the worlds pollination. In other words: they give us food! We need bees more than they need us, but we’re killing them.

Story 2: Drones (autonomous unmanned aircrafts) are powerful. Used in warfare since 2002, the ethics of this technology is very, very messy. Drone swarms (multiple drones) are even more dangerous and are currently being tested for warfare.

What happens next? Choose your own adventure!

(Both stories end with the smartest, richest, and prettiest humans moving to Mars)

Silver Lake

I just received a recording of my concert band work, Silver Lake. This piece was commissioned and performed (Oct 17) by the Mid America Freedom Band. This work takes inspiration from the book By the Shores of Silver Lake, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This is the fifth book in the Little House book series, and was published in 1939. The piece depicts a day at Silver Lake (the area now known as De Smet, South Dakota.)

Here is a preview of the work:

This work will be published and available for purchase in 2019! Stay tuned 🙂

Adjudicating at 2018 Yamaha Australian National Band Championships

It was brilliant to co-adjudicate with Erin Ellenburg for the Open Flugelhorn section at the 2018 Yamaha Australian National Band Championships.

The third movement from my Flugelhorn Concerto was the set piece. It was exciting to hear so many variations of the work, especially given that I’ve only ever performed the work myself and never actually watched a performance.

Congratulations to everyone who performed! Thank you for taking the time to learn quite a challenging work.

Results from the section

Erin Ellenburg (co-adjudicator) Michelle Nguyen (Accompanist), Maja Heath Australian Open Flugelhorn Champion, and Louisa Trewartha (co-adjudicator and composer)

Trumpet Case Questionnaire

Hi there,

As part of the Australian trumpet and cornet playing community, I would like to invite you to take part in a questionnaire that I have devised.

I have discussed with some of you our joined frustration regarding the lack of affordable, comfortable, and appealing trumpet backpack cases available. Although I’m not sure I will be able to solve this problem, this questionnaire is my first step in considering what comes next.
Please feel free to forward this on to your Australian trumpet and cornet playing colleagues, parents of students, bandmates etc.

This questionnaire should take no more than 5 minutes to complete:

Thank you in advance for your time.

Kind Regards,
Louisa Trewartha

Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra: Australian Composers School

I’ve been extremely fortunate this week to be working with the TSO and tutors Paul Stanhope, Jessica Wells, and Maria Grenfell, and TSO assistant conductor Elena Schwarz.

Four students from across Australia were selected to take part in the week-long program (Samantha Wolf, Alex Turley, and Adam Brook) in which we rehearsed our own pieces, a song arrangement, and a piano orchestration.

The week concluded with a concert of the original works and the orchestrated suite of Schumann’s Papillons. An ABC radio interview about the week can be found here and here.

Flugelhorn Concerto selected for 2018 National Competition

I am very chuffed to announce that the 3rd movement from my Flugelhorn Concerto has been selected as the work for open solo at the 2018 Australian National Band Championship, which will be held in Melbourne.

For anyone who is planning to play this work please note the following amendments that should be noted at the beginning of your first edition:

  • Style markings throughout the work are specific to each instrument part e.g Mvt 1, bar 1 the piano plays ‘boldly’ while the flugelhorn plays ‘mysteriously’.
  • Mvt 1: The flugelhorn part is written for a B flat flugelhorn. Disregard any differing key information in the piano part.
  • Mvt 2: The repeat from bar 11-20 is not indicated in the piano part, and is optional.
